Why filtering your reviews gets your business penalised
Filtering sounds sensible. Send the happy customers to Google and quietly catch the unhappy ones in a private feedback form. Plenty of apps sell exactly that. It is called review gating, it is against Google's rules, and it can cost you the review section you spent years building.
What counts as filtering
Review gating is any system that checks how a customer feels before deciding whether to show them the review link. The thumbs up or thumbs down email. The how did we do page that only sends the happy faces to Google. The follow up message that goes out after five star feedback and nothing else. If an unhappy customer gets a different path from a happy one, that is gating, however politely the app describes itself.
What the rules actually say
The rules are clearer than most people think. Asking for reviews is allowed. Asking every single customer is allowed, and it is exactly what we help you do. What is not allowed is selective asking, offering money, discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews, or discouraging negative ones. The line is simple. Everyone gets the same ask, and nobody gets anything in return for their stars.
What happens when you get caught
Google removes reviews it believes were gated, bought or swapped, and businesses have had their review sections restricted entirely for it. Picture your profile with the stars switched off while the shop next door keeps theirs. And if a tool or an agency set the filter up for you, that does not help either. Google penalises the profile, not the supplier, and the supplier keeps the fee. The shortcut is never worth it.
The honest way to handle a bad review
Ask everyone and accept the occasional knock. 81% check Google reviews (Source: consumer review surveys), and those readers are not looking for perfection. A calm, polite reply to a bad review often does more for you than another glowing one, because it shows how you treat people when something goes wrong. A wall of nothing but praise looks odd. A real mix, answered well, looks like a business you can trust with your money.
