How to show up higher on Google Maps for your town
When someone in your town types cafe near me or plumber near me, Google shows a map with three businesses on it. Most people never look past those three. You cannot buy your way in, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. But you can improve your chances a great deal, and none of it needs an agency.
Finish your Google Business Profile
Google fills that map using your Business Profile, so give it everything. Correct opening hours, including bank holidays. The right category, and the right services. Real photos of the place, the food, the work, taken on your phone this month, not five years ago. A profile that is complete and current tells Google you are open, active and worth showing. It takes an evening, it is free, and most of your competitors have not bothered.
Get a steady flow of reviews
Reviews are about 20% of local rankings (Source: Whitespark local ranking survey), which makes them one of the biggest levers you actually control. Businesses with 50+ reviews are far more likely to show in map results (Source: published local SEO studies). Getting there is boringly simple: ask every customer at the moment they are happiest, make it a five second job with a tap card, and never pay, filter or fake. A steady trickle of real reviews beats a suspicious burst every time.
Reply to every single review
Replies show Google and future customers that someone is home. Thank the nice ones in a sentence. Answer the rough ones calmly, fix what went wrong and say so. A listing full of unanswered reviews looks abandoned, and abandoned does not get found.
Keep your details identical everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should match exactly on your website, your social pages, your profile and any directory that lists you. Small mismatches, an old number here, a different spelling there, make Google less sure about who you are. Less certainty means fewer appearances on the map.
Ignore the shortcut sellers
Nobody can promise you a spot in the map pack. Not us, not anyone. Agencies that swear they can are charging you monthly for hope. Do the unglamorous jobs above, keep the reviews coming, and you give Google every reason to push you up for your town. That is the whole trick, and you can do all of it yourself.
