SEO for small business owners who do not have time for SEO
You did not start your business to learn about search engines. But somewhere along the way somebody told you that you need SEO, and probably a monthly retainer to go with it. Here is the honest version: a local business needs far less SEO than the agencies want you to believe, and most of it takes minutes, not months.
The three things Google actually checks
For a local search like cafe near me, Google mostly wants to know three things. Is your business real, is it nearby, and do people rate it. Real means a complete Google Business Profile with the right name, opening hours and phone number. Nearby is out of your hands. Rated is your reviews, and that is the one lever you can pull every single day.
Ten minutes a week is enough
Claim your Google Business Profile if you have not already. Check your opening hours are right, especially around bank holidays. Add a few real photos of your shop, your food, your work. Reply to every review, good and bad, in a couple of friendly sentences. That is a proper local SEO routine for a small business, and it costs nothing but a cup of tea's worth of time.
Let your customers do the heavy lifting
Reviews are about 20% of local rankings (Source: Whitespark local ranking survey). No blog post, no backlink package and no monthly report does as much for you as a steady stream of real reviews from real customers. So make asking part of the job. Ask every customer, at the till or on the doorstep, while they are still smiling. Never pay for reviews and never pick and choose who you ask. Google penalises that kind of filtering, and we never do it.
What you can safely ignore
Agencies love work you cannot see. Audits full of words you have never heard, content calendars, technical reports for a five page website. If someone cannot explain what they did this month in one plain sentence, you are paying for silence. Put the retainer money back in the till and put a review habit in its place. It will not push you up overnight, but it keeps working long after the agency would have sent its next invoice, and it gets you found by the people around the corner, which is the whole point.
